The Rock as far as known has its origins in the year 1749. It was frequented by Thomas Kemp during the building of Sussex Square who held business meetings on the premises. The sign today shows Kemp and his business partners in conference within the Rock. A well can be found in the cellar and pot-holers have been down sixty feet and not yet found water, a stone dropped into the well makes no sound. Smugglers used this well as ways and means of transporting goods to and from the beach. In addition to being used by smugglers the cellar was also used for years as a mortuary holding up to sixty corpses and is reputed today to be haunted. The Rock today is still loosely based on a nautical theme and has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We found the establishment clean and warm. The Rock is a Courage house selling Directors as the house beer and Harvey's Best as the guest real ale. In addition there is Guinness, Scrumpy Jack, Holsten, Beamish and Kronenburg on draught. The team found a well kept cellar with good conditioned beers. Food is on offer between 11am & 10pm, seven days a week. Breakfast is served between 9am & 11am. The menu is well balanced and appears good value with vegetarians catered for.
